The Huffington Post
The Huffington Post is an 'internet newspaper' and a leading online voice.
THE EDITOR
Launched in the US May 2005 The Huffington Post began life as a commentary space for American liberals, an alternative to the www.drudgereport.com. On February 7, 2011, AOL announced it would acquire The Huffington Post for US$315 million. Its UK launch is part of the group's ambitious plans to be present in 12 countries by the end of this year.
Its co-founder and Editor-At-Large is Arianna Huffington, a Cambridge educated Greek-American author, media personality and former gubernatorial candidate, whom the Guardian describes as ‘the Queen of the blogosphere.'
THE SITE
The Huffington Post UK is a must-read for the political and journalistic class of the United Kingdom. Although early days yet, it hopes to attract millions of unique visits each month, attracting readers with its unique blend of aggregated content and blogs from high profile personalities and politicians. It features news, opinion and videos from the worlds of politics, business, media, arts, entertainment, living, style, comedy and green issues.
Ed Milliband is one of the first party leaders to blog for the site. It also values comments from its registered users. Those who become top commenters have the chance to be featured bloggers.
THE FUTURE
Unlike Murdoch, Arianna Huffington believes that internet users expect free content and, in turn, she does not pay people who blog for the site, which is all very well, but one of these days, the price of free news will surely have to be paid by someone?
