Wired News
Designed for the classic geek, Wired News is the online home of Wired, the magazine founded in 1993 by Louis Rossetto and Jane Metcalfe. A conservative ‘daily technology news site' offering videos and slideshows, Wired News reports on the effect of technology on politics, culture, science, entertainment and the economy. There are also blogs which keep you up to date with everything from software developments and new gadgets. However, one called Danger Room - ‘what's next for the military, law enforcement and national security' - might not be greeted warmly by non-Republican visitors.
One of the most amusing parts of Wired News is Geekipedia, which promises to let you in on the ‘people, places, ideas and trends you need to know now.' This encyclopaedia of all things technological is also published as a supplement with the magazine. The entries are snappy and entertaining with J.J. Abrams for instance being described as ‘the biggest geek in network television,' whose show Lost ‘brought TV into the age of internet obsessives.'
Wired News is clear, easily navigable and makes great use of screen space, filling its pages but avoiding a cluttered feel. It also has a comprehensive archive which takes the visitor all the way back to the magazine's origins in the early nineties, allowing the digitally obsessed among us to trace developments in the industry across the last fifteen years.
