The General Register Office
This is the new website of the General Register Office. It tells you how to register births, marriages and deaths and how to obtain certificates. For family historians there is now an essential section where certificates for BMDs can be obtained dating back to 1837 when civil registration began. NB that this site is for registrations in England and Wales. We review sites for Scotland and Ireland in our Regional Resources section.
From the home page look at the right hand side headed 'research' and click on the link to 'investigating your family tree'. You can buy certificates online and there is an overseas section too. There is also a section on this site for still-births and adoptions.
