RootsChat

RootsChat, started just two years ago, is a fascinating and easy-to-use messaging forum for everyone researching their family or local history. Given the huge interest in genealogy on the web, the founders of this simple and clever site decided that family historians might well like to share the knowledge which they have acquired. And they were right.

The focus of the site is on Ireland and the British Isles and there are message boards for every county in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Visitors can log in for free and post questions or answers on the relevant message board. It is also possible to share GEDcom and text files. For a taster of what is available go to the bottom of the home page where the latest topics are posted.

Navigation round this site is extremely simple, the service is free, there is a very useful set of links and a monthly competition to trace the ancestors of someone from the 1881 census.

Needless to say, this site is extremely popular.
