Office of National Statistics

Most of this very extensive website is dedicated to current statistics covering everything from the numbers of Optical Vouchers issued to patients needing spectacles to the fact that Jack and Emily are currently the most popular baby names. Genealogists wil be mainly interested in Birth, Marriage and Death Registration, in other ONS Websites.

This is where all the acronyms start to get comfusing. The Office of National Statistics (ONS) oversees the General Register Office (GRO), which is responsible for indexing and issuing civil registration certificates (birth, deaths and marriages or BDMs). The GRO indexes are held at the FRC (with microfiche copies in some major libraries and at LDS FHCs), but unless you can attend the FRC in person, or employ a records agent, this is where to apply to obtain certificates.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Birth, Marriage and Death leads to a new page with picture boxes for Births, Deaths and Marriages, Stillbirths and Adoptions. If you have not investigated these resources before, do make use of the guidance given in the Research box below, before going any further. You can now order online, but you can download application forms in PDF format. This section also gives details about how to apply by post, telephone or fax. It will also give you details of fees, which are more expensive than applying at the FRC, and even more if you don't have the exact GRO reference. There are links to the local registration offices that are online, as these will also supply, sometimes more cheaply, certificates of BDMs that were registered in their area, though the service varies considerably depending on the willingness of local staff.

Adoptions is another potentially useful part of the site, as it provides information on access to birth records, and the Adoption Contact Register is a confidential way for birth parents and other relatives to assure an adopted person that contact would be welcome.
