findmypast.com

Findmypast.com is a brilliant family history and genealogy website containing over 550 million family history records, with more being added all the time.

Formerly named 1837online.com, they were the first to put the birth, marriage and death records of
England and Wales online, for the purpose of allowing public access to the indexes. These records were previously only available to search at certain locations in England. This achievement earned the site the prestigious Queen's Award for Innovation in 2007.

This site is wonderful news for genealogists as it has become an essential for anyone tracing their family history. Why? Because from this site you can dowload and pay for civil registration records without visiting a library or a register office.

Searching is free on findmypast.com, as is building an online family tree with the innovative Family Tree Explorer software. To view records you will need to purchase credits, either by buying pay-per-view units or one of three subscription options.

Ancestors on board, in association with The National Archives, contains exclusive, full-colour Passenger Lists for all ships leaving the UK from 1890-1960.

Since the website launched it has expanded markedly from just birth, marriage and death records to now include the 1841, 1861, 1871 and 1891 and 1901 censuses for England and Wales, an extensive collection of military records, a number of occupations directories and an electoral roll search.

Working is association with the Federation of Family History Societies, they have also recently added 2.3 million baptism records to The Parish Council Records Collection, which already includes 15 million burial records and nearly 2 million marriage records. Among the newly added records are 346,000 baptism records for London's Docklands area covering much of East London and provided by Docklands Ancestors.
