Family Records Centre

The Family Records Centre was established in 1997 by the PRO and the Office for National Statistics. Topics introduces the core of its collection, which is made up of indexes of births, marriages, deaths and adoptions, previously held at the General Register Office in St. Catherine's House, London. These are the indexes you need to consult to find the references for ordering birth, marriage and death certificates. Guides to each of these can be read online and offer further internal links, so they are well worth investigating.

The FRC also holds census returns for England and Wales, previously held at the PRO itself in Chancery Lane, records of Immigration and Emigration, and Military Records.

Partners provides links to the main UK record offices, including A2A (Access to Archives), part of the National Archives, as well as those of Northern Ireland, GRO, GRO Scotland, National Archives of Scotland, Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru and the India Office Records, among others. You'll also find full details of the holdings, and information about how to get there and opening hours, essential if you're planning a visit.
