Ofcom Maps - Broadband Speeds
Ofcom, the independent regulator and competition authority for the UK's communication industries, has just released a report on the UK's broadband connectivity. The government requested Ofcom to report on the state of broadband in the UK and the information collected will be updated annually.
INTERACTIVE MAP
The interactive map shows accurate information on broadband take-up , connection speeds and availability. The UK has been divided into areas and ranked on how they score on these four broadband metrics, with 1 being the highest and 5 the lowest. You can view the map in different options, either as overall performance or drill down to one of the report metrics.
AND THE WINNERS ARE
Edinburgh scores highly with Bristol closely following on behind. Brighton and Hove have the highest take up in the UK with 80% of residents connected. Rural areas are still poorly served with slow connection speeds, on average well below 2Mb per second as fibre optic networks have yet to be installed and thus rely on copper telephone lines which have limited delivery speeds.
The government has allocated £530m to help provide the UK with the best superfast broadband networks in Europe by 2015 and is encouraging local authorities to develop their own broadband plans.
