Oxfam is one of the most famous of international charities, raising money to fight poverty and helping to direct attention towards the plight of those who have so little in a world of plenty.

THE BEGINNING

The Oxford Committee for Famine Relief was set up in 1942 to help Greek civilians affected by the Second World War. Unlike many charities designed to deal with one specific problem, Oxfam survived. Its first charity shop was opened in Oxford in 1948 and since 1995 it's been part of Oxfam International, a confederation of organisations committed to combating poverty.

The current emergencies page will take you directly to the most up-to-date appeals, such as the food crises in East and West Africa and the floods in Guatemala.
