National Literacy Trust

The National Literacy Trust is an independent charity committed to improving literacy. With 1 in 6 people struggling with literacy in the UK, and 1 in 3 children that don't own a single book, there is still much that can be done in this area. Lack of literacy has implications for child development, social mobility, employment. An inability to read is an enormous social barrier, which with a little attention, can be easily removed.

RESOURCES & TRAINING

The National Literacy Trust website offers resources and support for schools, families and libraries, including information on conferences and training programmes for teachers as well as all sorts of advice and learning tools for parents to use with their children. It is never too late to learn to read, and adult education is a major part of the Trust's campaign.

GET INVOLVED

If you want to get involved with improving literacy in this country, there are several ways you can help. The Evening Standard have just launched a literacy campaign, or check out the Reading For Life Campaign, run by the Literacy Trust. Whether you donate money for books, or choose to help someone learn to read, even the smallest effort can make a difference.
