Motley Fool
Credit card types: 0% balance transfers and/or purchases, lifetime fixed rate on balance transfers, gold/platinum/ adverse credit, funky/unusual, student/graduate, foreign-use.
Search for credit cards via the Best Buy table or through the more comprehensive Search Wizard.
The default ordering of Best Buys is generally by length of the 0% period for balance transfers although there are some inconsistencies (e.g. How does Egg come in at 6th place with 0% balance transfers to 01/11/2007?). Alternatively, you can filter by lowest APR, cashback, rewards and lifetime balance transfers.
Search all credit cards by Search Wizard for the widest selection of cards. The Search Wizard is accessed by clicking on the Search All Cards button on the best buy table in the credit card section. This is where you will find your gold and platinum, adverse, "funky" (e.g. Harley-Davidson Chrome Affinity), student/graduate and foreign-use cards.
Some inconsistencies emerged between the Best Buy tables and the Search Wizard results. For example, the Best Buy tables generated three cards by lowest standard APR, namely Barclaycard Simplicity (6.8%), Abbey (10.9%) and Nectar (12.9%). The full search threw up Barclaycard Simplicity (6.8%), Co-operative Bank Flat Rate Platinum (8.9%), Co-operative Bank Flat Rate Gold (9.9%) and Smile Current Account Gold (9.9%).
Likewise, there were inconsistencies with 0% balance transfer cards. The Best Buy table came up with Halifax (12m), Virgin (13m), Barclaycard Simplicity (13m), Abbey (12m) and MBNA (12m). The full search produced Virgin (13m), HSBC Mastercard (13m), HSBC Premier Mastercard Premier (13m),Capitol One Platinum (13m) and Abbey Balance Transfer (12m).
Verdict
User-friendly and easy to navigate with an emphasis on 0% cards (and why not?). Guides are well-written and cover the major issues. Tables are crisp and clean you can get to the card fine print (charges & fees, restrictions, other features) by clicking on the More button adjacent to each card offering.
But you can't rely on the Best Buy tables alone to find the best card. Better to start with the Search Wizard and check with the Best Buys later.
