Top tips for making your website more visible

In a sneak peak at the book, here are some top tips on how to make your website and business more visible online.

1. Index you site on the three main search engines: Google, Yahoo! And Live Search (Microsoft's search engine).

2. Make sure that you fill in the page title of each page, as this is what search engines use first of all when searching you website.

3. Include your name at least once in the main copy on each page, but don't use it repeatedly in the hope that it will increase your position in search engine results. It won't, and search engines will instead regard your website as spam.

4. Don't include hidden links, as search engines will also view this as spam.

5. Don't use ‘doorway pages' - web pages that contain several instances of a particular keyword to increase the site's ranking on a search engine - as you might find your site is ‘blacklisted' by the search engines.

6. Building web links with other sites will help improve your ranking in search engine results, as the more popular your site, the more likely it is to rise to the top of a search engine's results page.

7. The higher a site's page ranking, the more valuable that link is to your website. To find out a site's page rank, simply download the Google toolbar (wwwtoolbar.google.com). You should be looking for sites with a page ranking of one or above.

8. Another way of building up quality links for your websites is to comment on stories that are relevant to your website content. Also consider linking with associations, professional bodies, your employer or free directories.
