The company was started in 1914 as an underwear business by a young Scot called Alexander MacRae, under the brand name 'Fortitude', which was taken from the motto on the clan MacRae crest. He migrated to Australia in 1910, and in response to the growing beach culture there, MacRae quickly expanded his operations to include swimwear. In 1928 it took on it's now famous brand name. In 2008, its 80th year, SPEEDO launched the LZR Racer®, the most technically advanced swimsuit in the world.
