Join The National Trust's Outdoor Gym Challenge

The National Trust is running a number of guided walks throughout January. From walks past castle battlements and temples to lakeside follies and rushing rivers, The Trust's ‘Calorie Burn-o-metre' will let you know just how many calories you are shifting as you walk some of the UK's most stunning settings.

Lindisfarne Castle, Northumberland
Winter opening at Lindisfarne Castle, 8-9 and 22-23 January 10am - 3pm.

Dramatically perched on a rocky crag and only accessible over the causeway at low tide, this island castle is a breathtaking spot for a walk. See Holy Island and Lindisfarne Castle in all of its winter splendour by taking the 4 - 5 mile walk around the island, taking in the sand dunes, bird hide and the harbour.

Calorie Burn-o-metre: 400 - 500 calories

Cost: Adults £6.60, Child £3.30 and Family £16.50.

Clumber Park, Nottinghamshire
Walkabout Clumber, 9 January 10.30am - 12.30pm

Clumber will impress you from the moment you arrive; a two mile avenue of lime trees makes for a breathtaking entrance and welcomes you to a parkland estate covering almost 4000 acres. Clumber offers 1, 2, 3, 5 and 8 mile walks as part of its healthy walks initiative, in partnership with Bassetlaw District Council and Bassetlaw Primary Care.

Calorie Burn-o-metre: 100 - 800 calories

Cost: Normal parking charges apply for your first ‘Walkabout'. A free vehicle entry pass will then be provided to allow access for participation on further walks.

Ickworth House, Suffolk
Woodland ramble, 11 January 10am start


Join the Head Forester on a six mile ramble through the park and explore acres of space, woodland, wildlife and a stunning architectural oddity. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions about the beautiful estate, walk away from the main visitor routes and work up an appetite for lunch.

Calorie Burn-o-metre: 600 - 700 calories

Cost: Adults £12, NT member £8, Child under 17 £8 (includes park and garden admission).

Marsden Moor Estate, West Yorkshire
Milestones and Way Stones, 15 January 10am - 4pm

This walk will definitely help you feel the burn after Christmas indulgence. It's a 10 mile hike along stony lanes and across the moors, with some steep slopes - the reward being beautiful views across the Peak District.

Calorie Burn-o-metre:  1000 - 1200 calories

Cost: The walk is free of charge, including free car parking.

Hanbury Hall, Worcestershire
Park walk, 9, 16, 23, 30 January 11.15am - 1pm

Hanbury boasts a stunning 20 acre garden complete with Orangery, ice-house, 18th-century bowling green and even a working mushroom house. After you've explored these, there's still more to see as the gardens are themselves surrounded by equally stunning park land which offers walkers some fabulous views over the local countryside .This guided walk through the park is approx 2 ½ miles and will take around 1hr 30 mins to complete.

Calorie Burn-o-metre:  250 calories

Cost: Normal garden and grounds admission charges apply plus an event charge - Adults £2.50, Child £1.50.

Lanhydrock, Cornwall
Ancient Trees and Hidden Pools, 22 January 10.30am - 1.30pm

Join our estate team to discover this extraordinary network of woodland, park and riverside paths as well as some of the lesser-known Lanhydrock features. Walk away the winter blues on this guided walk, followed by a two-course lunch in the restaurant

Calorie Burn-o-metre: 300 calories (less the two-course lunch)
