Clear up adult acne and oily skin
Many people struggle with an oily skin and the heat of summer can exacerbate the dreaded shine. Rectifying this problem could be as simple as switching to an organic moisturiser especially formulated for this skin type or it may indicate a more deeply rooted problem. Here are a few tips we use instore and within the clinic for addressing this skin type.
1) HORMONAL HELP
Many people find that skin can be oilier at different times of the month or affected by increased stress and lifestyle changes. Or you may have noticed your skin becomes oily and spot prone after you have come off the contraceptive pill. If you suspect that your skin condition may be affected by changing levels of hormones it is a good idea to discuss it with your Doctor of health professional. Naturopath Rebecca Edwards explains ‘Hormonal testing may reveal elevated levels of the hormone testosterone. This is a hormone, which is found in much higher levels in men, and is known to be a cause of acne outbreaks. Levels can increase at times of stress or when you come off the contraceptive pill, which does not contain testosterone. Elevated levels of testosterone may cause red, painful pimples, particularly on the chin and around the jawline.' Simple health and lifestyle changes may help bring your hormones back into balance and could be just what is needed to clear up your skin.
2) EAT FOR YOUR SKIN HEALTH
Try to maintain blood sugar levels within a normal range. Your body excretes hormones, particularly insulin and other androgenic hormones to help regulate blood sugar. This may complicate your hormone balance and lead to exacerbated skin problems. Switch your snacks for low GI (oat cakes and hummus) options and eat like a king at breakfast to maintain levels throughout the day. This should help ensure you don't reach for refined sugars and coffee throughout the day. Try adding some pumpkin seeds to your breakfast or snacks. These are filled with zinc, which is beneficial for general skin health, especially acne prone skin.
3) CHECK YOUR SKINCARE PRODUCTS
Often we reach for the strongest products to treat acne and oiliness. Harsh cleansers may strip the skin of natural oils and send the skin a signal that it needs to produce more oil, beginning a cycle of alternating dryness and oiliness. Try a gentle natural gel cleanser like the Nude Skincare Cleansing Facial Wash, which won't dry skin out. Then follow with a moisturiser like the Stem Organics Balancing Face Fluid. This light non-greasy organic moisturiser for oilier skins reduces shine and helps balance skin long term with Black Willow Bark, which has potent anti-microbial properties that banish any spots if they are a problem.
4) USE SOME TRICKS OF THE TRADE
Make Up artists and skincare professionals have a few tricks for reducing shine and oiliness. Try a skin mattifier throughout the day, Amala Purifying Mattifier is an oily skin must-have. It leaves a matte finish, using rice powder, on the oiliest skin in seconds. Reapply throughout the day use as a make-up primer. Mineral powders can be great at mattifying skin. W3LL People Realist X can be used prior to your mineral base or as a finishing powder to reduce the visibility of pore size and mattify the skin. If you find that skin gets oilier through the day try blotting papers. Jane Iredale's Blotting Papers are made from all-natural organic flax seed, which is more absorbent than rice and linen.
5) DON'T DESPAIR
And lastly, don't despair, oily skin may be a problem now but rest assured as you age this may be the more desirable skin type to have. Oil protects the skin from ageing prematurely so in the future you'll be glad your skin was a little oily!
