Alternative ways to help prevent travel sickness

Sometimes the misery of travel sickness is enough to make you wonder if it's worth taking a holiday, but relief can come in a variety of natural and alternative forms:

Traditional cure Chew a piece of ginger to relieve feelings of nausea, or try drinking some ginger tea.

Homeopathic remedies Try Nelsons Travella Tablets, a selection of homeopathic remedies combined to bring relief for the range of symptoms associated with traavel sickness (£4.19 for 72 tablet, available from Think Natural, Boots or Superdrug). Or try Coccolus 6 or Tabacum to relieve nausea, or try Aconite or Argentum nitricum to calm you on an aeroplane.

Aromatherapy Cariad's Travel Blend Aromaball provides a blend of lemon, lavender and rosemary essentail oils in a grapeseed carrier oil for easy roll-on application to the temples and wrists. Peppermint is also helpful for cooling, soothing, relieving headaches and settling the stomach.

Tape When this product was recently featured on This Morning, the phonelines were jammed with people trying to track it down. Travelwell Sound Relief for Travel Sickness tape is especially suitable for children, pregnant mothers, elderly and diabetic travel sickness sufferers as there are no drugs or side effects. Simply pop the tape into your Walkman 15-20 minutes before your journey and let it play in the background until you are satisfied that there are no symptoms. Bach Flower Remedy Every traveller should have some Rescue Remedy in their kit for when the stress gets all too much. Instant calming in a bottle. (£4 for 10ml bottle, available from Think Natural and other suppliers).

Travel Bands Particularly helpful for young children, these apply gentle pressure to an accupressure point on the wrist to guard against nausea. (£7.50 for a pack of two from www.wellbeing.com)

Breathing Recent research has proved what your mother always told you: sit quietly, with as much fresh air or ventilation as possible, and take slow deep breaths. And best of all, it's free!
