Agnus Castus - the women's friend

The tradition of useing Agnus Castus to treat problems associated with the menstual cycle dates back over 2500 years. Derived from the berries of the chaste tree (Vitex Agnus Castus), this useful phytomedicine has been one of the major remedies for gynaecological problems in most cultures, and has been found in English gardens since the sixteenth century. Hippocrates, the Greek physician hailed as the father of modern medicine, wrote, "If blood flows from the womb, let the woman drink dark wine in which the leaves of the chaste tree have been steeped."

The extract acts on the pituitary gland to balance hormonal fluctuations, so is helpful in the treatment of a wide range of disorders, inlcuding PMS, painful periods, menopause (particularly the relief of hot flushes), polycystic ovaries and some other causes of infertility, and loss of libido. It is also effective in stimulating lactation in nursing mothers.

It is available in many forms, from tincture to capsules anad pills, and so dosage depends on the concentrate of the extract. Always read the instructions for use, as some preparations are taken once per day, the tinctures up to six times per day.

For a chronic problem, take it every day through your cycle for up to three months,to ensure long-term stabilisation of the hormone levels, though you may notice an impovement almost immediately. For some women it is effective just to take it when symptoms occur. Adverse reactions are comparatively rare, but as with all treatments, stop taking them immediately if you experience strong side effects.
