The Food Illustrator

Nearly a year ago, David Meldrum, successful illustrator and graphic designer, set himself an unusual artistic and culinary challenge. Starting in June 2010, he decided to illustrate everything that he ate or drank, every day, for a year and so it was The Food Illustrator was born.

ACRYLIC, WATERCOLOUR AND PEN

Owing to a long-nurtured interest in advertising, David chose to illustrate his food, using acrylic, watercolour, pen and ink, sometimes in its raw form, or on the plate but often in its packaging.  The result is an impressive visual diary, and the information revealed therein is strangely intimate. It does not take long for the viewer to learn that this particular artist has a weakness for Freddo Chocolate and Peroni!

HOW TO PACKAGE AND ADVERTISE

Thus it is that an idea that initially seems quite daft suddenly offers an interesting insight into a life, and how, without even realising it, we can become so attached to certain typographies. The Food Illustrator project highlights how packaging, advertising and labeling can inspire us, captivate us, and ultimately persuade us into a purchase.

Still a work in progress (the year is not yet up!), the Food Illustrator project will culminate with an exhibition in London, of all 365 artworks and a limited edition monograph of the entire body of work.
Follow one man's diet for a year - through his beautiful illustrations.
