Facebook

Facebook is an extensive but simple to use networking site, highly popular with, though not limited to, college students. Founded in Feburary 2004 as a way for undergraduates, faculty and staff to interact and make new contacts, it now hosts over 7 million individual user pagers in the US alone and has become hugely fashionable in the UK. Facebook has a number of basic features common to a whole host of other networking sites; you can create your own profile page, upload photos and add other users as friends in order to see what they're up to. It is a number of unique features which makes Facebook a truly unique and well executed site, however, arguably the leader in its field. The ability to search for people you may want to get to know and add as friends, for instance, is much facilitated by its network feature, which allows you to view profiles of people who are not yet your friends but are part of a network that you are a member of (that is a city where you live or study). Searching for people you already know and want to add couldn't be simpler either - just type a name into the search box to see whether that person has an account or not. This may sound obvious, but it is a feature sorely missed on myspace, where people's sites are often hard to find.

Facebook is impressive not only because so many people are on it, though this is of course vital for a networking site, but because it manages to combine cutting edge interactivity with unique simplicity. One notable example is the photo tagging feature. Having uploaded a photo onto your page you can make a note of exactly which individuals are posing in it. Having labeled them, the photo will automatically be uploaded to their facebook pages too.
