Digg.com
Started back in 2004, Digg is a place where people can discover and share content from anywhere on the web. From the biggest online destinations to the most obscure blog, Digg surfaces the best stuff as voted on by its users.
ABOUT
From news to videos to images to Podcasts, Digg works by posting submissions from its users, which other users then ‘Digg' if they like, ‘Bury' if they don't like, ‘Comment' upon or ‘Share' with their friends. The more Diggs your submission gets, the more likely it is to be promoted on the front page for millions of visitors to see.
CRITICISMS
While this process of voting and commenting upon stories is meant to be democratic, the system has come under criticism. While users have been said to have too much control over content allowing sensationalism and misinformation to thrive, the existence of the ‘bury' option has been said to be unfair in that the ‘buriers' are held unaccountable for their criticism, and may not represent the prevailing view of the community. It has also been reported that the top 100 Digg users control 56% of Digg's frontpage content, and that a group of just twenty individuals had submitted 25% of the front page content, provoking accusations of manipulation.
Digg is currently one of the most important social bookmarking sites online, but with Google backing out of a potential sale of $200 million earlier this year (July 2008), numerous criticisms to contend with and competition in the form of Yahoo! Buzz, it will have its work cut out in the coming years if it wishes to remain on top.
