Based on the iconic 1987 movie of the same name, Dirty Dancing the musical tells the story of 17 year-old Frances ‘Baby' Houseman who, during a summer holiday with her family, learns to dance and a whole lot more.
During a heady, hot summer, Baby joins a crowd a world apart from her privileged upbringing, and falls head over heels in love with her dance partner, the charismatic holiday camp entertainer Johnny Castle.
A story about a girl's transition to womanhood, Dirty Dancing the musical is as energetic as the movie. Featuring a mammoth 55 songs, including the number one records Time of My Life and Hungry Eyes; Dirty Dancing the musical is both a fast-paced production and a tender love story.
Many of us remember the movie and the soundtrack from the 80s, and still enjoy watching the popular film from time to time. Now's your chance to get an up close and personal Dirty Dancing experience at the Aldwych Theatre in London's West End.
Don't be fooled into thinking that you're merely going to see a stage carbon copy of the movie; over 40 per cent of the show's material is new, and the re-imagining of the story allows audiences to see more of Baby, more of Johnny and more of their relationship as it blossoms.
While it's sure to be a real treat of a trip down memory lane for fans of the movie, they'll also be surprised and delighted by the fresh spin on a classic film.
Bringing Baby and Johnny back to life must have been a daunting prospect for the show's leads Hannah Vassallo and Johnny Wright. A trained dancer, Hannah was plucked from a role in the Dirty Dancing ensemble to play the lead.
A real inspiration to wannabe stars, Hannah recalls how she went to the Dirty Dancing audition without ever having acted before. In fact, she admits that the "nearly didn't go to the audition in the first place", as she didn't think she had a chance of winning a role.
Canadian Johnny Wright plays his namesake Johnny Castle; the role made world famous by the late great Patrick Swayze. Managing to emulate Swayze's natural charisma can't be an easy task, yet Johnny is well qualified to re-incarnate Johnny Castle. A highly trained dancer, Wright is skilled in both classical and contemporary styles of dance.
While you may not be familiar with the previous work of the two leads, one familiar face in Dirty Dancing the musical is Ray Quinn. Quinn is best known for his success in TV reality shows including 2006's X-Factor, where he came second only to Leona Lewis.
Dirty Dancing the musical is the perfect night out for couples and groups of friends alike. Loved-up couples will relate to the chemistry and tender love story that develops between Baby and Johnny, whereas groups will have fun reliving their memories of the movie and singing along to all the hits. Grab tickets for Dirty Dancing the musical and enjoy the time of your life at London's Aldwych Theatre.
