What was the inspiration for the company/site?

When we decided to get started in the property industry, the one thing that hindered our progress was the fact that there were no ‘one-stop advice shops’ available. However, we were determined not to let challenges jeopardise our success, we slowly climbed the ladder towards building our property portfolio.

Once we had achieved this we realised that most of the help and support we received merely trickled in from various online resources. We agreed that our targets could have been more rapidly reached if we had been given access to a one-stop education portal.

We launched JustDoProperty to help others achieve their dreams in property.

When did you launch the site?

The site was launched in January 2010.

What are your greatest challenges?

One of the reasons I decided to start a property and online business was so I could work around my two young children. Trying to balance home and work life is a constant challenge but I love being able to work for myself in a flexible manner so I can be around for my two girls.

What's your background?

I worked for Hewlett-Packard in marketing for twenty years. I loved my job but decided that I really wanted to run my own business. I also knew that I wanted to have children and wanted to develop a way to look after them whilst still working.

I became an accidental landlord, when I moved from the North to the South of the country due to my job. I let my flat out and realised how great the cash-flow was, I then developed a passion for property. From this one property I went on to build a small portfolio. Whilst researching my property business, I realised there was a gap in the market for a property website which consolidated property information.

Who do you admire in business?

Richard Branson – I love his determination to succeed, he is obviously passionate and loves what he is doing. He’s got a great fun aspect to business, for example, the Virgin broadband vans all have names, Marlon Vando, Lee Van Cleefe for example. It makes me laugh every time I see one. Richard Branson seems to have fun with a serious intent and doesn’t mind making fun of himself.

Please recommend a website that helps you promote or run your business

Facebook is a fantastic tool for our business. We can keep in touch with other property investors. It also helps us to keep up to date with property news. We also like to promote our articles and blog posts on Facebook, so it’s a great way to get some visibility.

What is the best piece of business advice you've been given?

Work smart, not hard! This really struck a chord with me. Sometimes you can be the hardest worker in the world but not get anywhere. I think in business if you work smart you’ll do really well.

What is your motto?

I love the motto – Seize the Day! I’m a really positive person and I think if you can have a positive outlook in life then you can’t go too far wrong.

Where do you see the business going from here?

We’re excited to have just brought on a new business partner who is helping us to develop the website. We are bringing in new experts to offer advice and we are also developing a directory of property suppliers.

Why do you like entering awards?

It’s an opportunity to present our website and to gain some recognition. It’s also great to see who else is entering awards and to learn about other companies in the industry.

Have you won an award before?

We haven’t entered any awards so far, so this is a new experience for us.
