Halifax
Halifax takes the largest share of the mortgage market in the United Kingdom. Not surprisingly, their view of what is happening and what is likely to happen in the market place is of paramount importance.
HOUSE PRICE MOVEMENTS
The Halifax House Price Index has been an institution since inception in 1984. The index is used by government departments, media and business as an authoritative indication of house price movements in the UK. It is based on the largest sample of housing data and provides the longest unbroken series of any similar UK index.
From the Homepage, the right hand tool bar has a button showing site map. This then reveals a very substantial section headed Housing Research and Economic View.
Also within this section is the Economic Outlook, providing a five-year view on the prospects for global and UK economies.
National Commentary and Analysis provides the immediate coverage of the previous month and the new forecast for the remainder of the year. It also updates the new annual forecast.
The site also contains a comprehensive table of House Price Indices that include percentage change, standard average price, and more importantly national average earnings and price/earnings ratios. These are key figures in understanding the possible movement of future prices. There is also important data on First Time Buyers and Former Owner Occupiers (All Houses).
SPECIAL FEATURES
The Latest Regional Summary is excellent. By placing your pointer onto the desired area of the United Kingdom you obtain current house price statistics. It is possible to print out the whole Regional Quarterly Summary if desired. Quarterly Regional Comments are available for some 12 regions throughout the UK if required.
The House Price Calculator indicates how average prices within each UK region have moved over the last few years. Details required are the region, the house price at the start of the computation, and the dates for the computation. The results indicate how the house has risen in value.
The Historical Data Spreadsheet downloads all the Halifax indices back to 1983.
Two final sections include an article on the Methodology applied, and a Timetable giving publication dates of the monthly reports.
