Bulb

A useful and fairly large site of US origin but nonetheless helpful to UK gardeners as a reference source. It goes by the full name of the Netherlands Flower Information Center, which is the US press office of the Dutch flower bulb industry. It's easy to navigate, with clear menus on the homepage and a permanent menu bar, plus further aids to navigation at the foot of each page. There are plenty of good quality photographs.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Guides includes information for Spring and Summer on topics such as the best bulbs to plant for the earliest possible display, and how to achieve an effective mixed border with different heights and styles.

Spring links to a series of technical and specialist off-site pages. There is detailed information on the main bulb families, with further advice on the most common species. Ideas for container planting are given, and there are a number of articles on colour-themed plantings, current vogues and close-ups on particular genera. All give suggestions of varieties to choose, with information on height, colour, and flowering time.

Summer has information on creating a tropical container garden, ideas for forcing, and detailed information on several key summer performers.

FAQ helps with problems such as whether or not to mulch, chooosing the best bulb food, and saving bulbs for next year.

History and Romance is an engrossing extra which looks at the elusive quest for the black tulip, the mystical and medicinal qualities of alliums, and the myth and poetry surrounding narcissus.
