Horticulture Online

A fairly pedestrian site but one with a good pedigree, since Horticulture is the longest-running gardening magazine in the US with a first class editorial team totalling many years of experience. There is a database of well-illustrated articles from five years worth of the magazine which cover ideas, inspiration and information. All are worth a browse. Navigation is straightforward, but bear in mind that this site contains links to garden.com which can make it difficult if you move from site to site. Registration is tricky and returned a member name and password unrelated to those submitted, but is necessary to read the back issues.

Special Features

Breaking Ground is where the fun starts, but you need Java to take advantage. It should download in less than 2 minutes, and you need browser versions of 3.0 or later.

From the Magazine is of most interest to UK readers, and in fact most other pages on the site are links to the facilities of garden.com for example, the Garden Planner, Plant Finder and Shopping Section. Registration with this site automatically registers you with garden.com.

Use the Magazine section to search a large number of back issues for articles by subject, author, or past issue.

The Gardener's Resources section provides a large number of links, and some reviews of books and sites.
