Landscape Man: Making a Garden
Making A Garden by Matthew Wilson was published in tandem with the Channel 4 TV series, Landscape Man, showing you how to apply the principles of garden design in your own plot. You don't need acres of land to benefit from Matthew Wilson's wisdom. A small roof terrace or balcony will suffice and be improved when following his advice and expertise.
WHO IS MATTHEW WILSON?
If you missed Landscape Man on Channel 4, viewers of the BBC's Gardeners' World will know him from his appearances on the show. Since 2008, he has been the Royal Horticultural Society's Head of Gardens Creative Development, overseeing all four RHS gardens in a creative capacity. He is also a regular contributor for Country Life, The Daily Telegraph and The Guardian.
AND THE BOOK
Making A Garden takes you from the initial assessment, putting your plans downon paper and drawing up an action plan, following the projects featured in the television series. If you want to start a garden from scratch or need to renovate a small area, Matthew Wilson can help. The book has a scrapbook style and is easy to dip into with its bite size article with hints and tips alongside images. Divided into three parts, Thought Process, Vision and Reality, the chapters cover organising and dividing space and the effects that certain elements of light, colour and texture can have on that space, not forgetting sound and colour too.
REALISED GARDENS
These include designs for a number of different settings and styles from urban modern, elegant classic, Mediterranean style and a roof top garden with photographs of the finished articles. The case studies from the TV series take you from the brief through to hard landscaping and planting. The book, however, was published too soon to show the end results but perhaps the reprint will address this.
WHY BUY IT
Making A Garden deconstructs garden design and applies it to an accessible and engaging formula. As they say, 'Your garden will never be the same again.'
