Annuals and Bi-annuals by Roger Phillips and Martyn Rix
If you want to buy a book about growing annuals then you could not find a better one than this. This is the latest addition to the great Garden Plants series which no serious gardener can be without. It is worth buying for the superb photographs alone.
ANNUALS
There are over one thousand plants in this book, many of which will be familiar to readers with even a rudimentary knowledge of gardening. There is a useful introduction which describes the main localities of annuals and biennials growing in the wild . The authors explain how to use annuals in the garden and how to grow them from seed. The main part of the book is devoted to the families of annuals, described in the usual botanical order: poppies, nasturtiums, pinks, lupins, sweet peas, antirrhinum, cosmos and many others.
WILD ANNUALS
Many of the photographs show annuals growing in the wild in distant parts of the world and there are also close up photographs for identification purposes. As usual Phillips and Rix have included their plates of various specimens taken on white backgrounds which alone make the book worth buying.
This book has taken seven years to put together and is a snip at £19.99.
