Mark Haviland, MD of Rakuten Marketing Europe, the global digital marketing company, shares some favourite sites.
Mark Haviland is the Managing Director of Rakuten Marketing Europe, a digital marketing company whose services encompass affiliate marketing, display and attribution.
Since joining the company in January 2012, Mark has overseen significant growth and diversification of services, as the company has built a broader digital marketing portfolio that is designed to bring clarity to clients, in an ever evolving and complex marketing landscape.
Time spent in international marketing and sales with Disney, and then CNN has helped Mark focus the company on protecting and building great brands; an approach encapsulated in its positioning as Trusted Advisor.
Mark has a hands on approach when dealing with his team, clients and publishers, and is working to ensure that an environment of collaboration and learning helps all involved improve the reputation, understanding and performance of the sector. Rakuten Marketing sponsors the Retail Category in this year's GWG Website of the Year Awards.
MY FAVOURITE SITES
TED - I love watching TED talks, not only for the broad variety of topics covered, but also for inspiration as a public speaker. It’s one thing to share valuable insights to a relevant audience; it’s another to truly engage that audience to share your passion.
Financial Times - I’ve got a digital and paper subscription to the FT, and read it cover to cover on my commute from Chiswick. While there is still a traditional industry aspect to its coverage, it is becoming increasingly digital in its outlook, in line with the rise of the online economy. It also gives great insights into why companies are rising and falling; the journalistic angle is often investigative and based on long held knowledge and relationships. It all helps me perform as an MD.
Fashion Beans - A great lifestyle publication for men. I’m getting better at buying stuff for myself online, and this site is one of the reasons... cool stuff, 10 bests, great photography, and clothes that stand out... even my other half approves.
The Drum - This has a great combo of brand and performance marketing news, plus insights into ad tech and people moves. It’s a constant effort being as close to cutting edge as you can, and this is one of my select ‘morning briefing’ sites, along with the FT, which I visit daily.
Econsultancy - This site should be bookmarked by any digital marketer. Its blog in particular is bursting at the seams with valid trends and insights in the e-commerce and performance industry. I know the folk there too, which reassures me of the quality.
My Favourite App... Pocket - This app helps me to be an organised MD, husband and father, all in one. I can save all the articles, videos and webpages that I spot online over the course of the day, but don’t have time to read. I can then browse my “virtual pocket” on the train or when I’m relaxing at home. A great app to prevent your inbox from filling up!
