Robert Mondavi

Mondavi is a giant and very high profile operation whose winery interests are not confined to their Napa Valley home, but have spread to operations or joint ventures in Chile, Italy and all over California. One of the problems with this site is that each of the separate operations have their own web presence, each with its own look and feel. Yet all are gathered under this umbrella site and share some common pages and features. This means there are not one, but a dozen different navigation strategies to understand. Thankfully, there is always a little button back to this homepage somewhere on each individual site. Explore the individual winery sites, but this review concerns itself with the useful features listed in the panel down the left hand edge of the homepage.

There's a lot of good material on this site, from their regular online Newsletter with a dozen features each issue, to an archive of recipes from their cookery school. The site is very professionally put together and the information is comprehensive.

SPECIAL FEATURES

The Online Newsletter is as it says, and very good it is too with a host of full length features not only on happenings on the Mondavi scene, but on wine and food subjects of very general interest. A recent edition featured articles entitled ‘The Importance of Terroir', ‘'The Liberated Enjoyment of Wine with Food' and ‘Celebrating 20 Years of Opus One' by Robert Mondavi.

Visiting Our Wineries gives all the details you will need if planning a visit (the tour at Mondavi is one of the most comprehensive on the Napa circuit). Maps are included.

Events and Education has a drop-down list of date and locations where you can see tastings, dinners and demonstrations featuring Mondavi wines. This includes an International section, with UK and other European events.

History gives all the details of the Mondavi family, their winery and wines.

Recipes mostly come from Mondavi's cookery school and form an enormous archive. Many foodies have this site bookmarked just for this section. Literally hundreds of full recipes are listed, along with wine-matching suggestions of course.

Other features

Press Releases A large archive going back to 1997, which makes fascinating reading.

COMMENTS
Mondavi's site is pretty business-like and no nonsense. But that means it avoids the flights of hyperbole to which others succumb. The winery information, and of course that recipe archive, make it one of the neatest sites of its type.
