Buitoni

Buitoni is one of Italy's largest producers of pasta and related food products and an internationally-recognised brand. The site aims primarily to give information about Italian cuisine, and pasta in particular. Although it's not a hard sell for Buitoni products, you have to query the culinary integrity of any company that sells shakers of ambient 'parmesan' cheese. It's clear and generally well-written, and the gorgeous pictures come up astonishingly quickly. If you have a small screen you may have to scroll down the page to access information.

Special Features

Recipe Database Recipes can be viewed by region of origin, or according to your immediate cooking requirements. Pick the shape of pasta you want to use, the ingredients you want to put with it and the length of time you are prepared to put into making the dish. A search for any shape of pasta, with a vegetarian recipe made in 20-40 minutes revealed a choice of eight dishes, some of them very similar to each other. A general search for lasagne recipes offered up only one - for a tuna lasagne. When the database can't provide exactly what you are looking for, however, it suggests similar dishes for consideration. Impressively, all recipes have a nutritional breakdown. You can peruse the newest recipes added to the site directly by clicking the on the button at the top right of the screen; otherwise, you'll see the latest additions are highlighted on the search results pages.

Journey the Regions An aspirational travelogue, beautifully photographed, with sections on Tuscany, Verona and the Northern Lakes, Milan, Turin and the South. It's a great introduction to Italy and from here you can link to regional recipes. For a description of the geography, culture and history of the country, click on Italy in Focus.

Wine Connoisseur This is admirably action-oriented. Instead of talking vaguely about Italian wine styles and winemaking regions, they recommend specific brands and vintages from Enotria Wine Cellars and supply names of stockists throughout Britain. Updating needs attention, though. Also here is a brief guide to the terms on Italian wine labels.

Other Features

Details of the Buitoni product range, and a history of Casa Buitoni, the company's huge Tuscan villa.
COMMENTS
A surprisingly admirable, editorially-strong site from a huge multinational.
