The Vegan Society

Primarily a philosophical, information-based site rather than a destination for vegan cooks, the emphasis is on exploring vegan beliefs and supporting a vegan lifestyle, although some may find it a little too earnest. Colourful and quick to download, it's a well-written, easy-to-read site, with recent updates displayed on the home page. Those with small screens may need to scroll down to find the main menu, which is arranged on the centre of the main page. Scroll further to find out what's new on site, or to use the search facility, which allows a choice of Boolean or case-sensitive keyword search.

Special Features

Why Vegan? looks at the five main reasons for becoming vegan - animal rights, health and environment issues, use of world resources and spiritual beliefs.

Recipes was dominated by special occasion cakes at the time of review. Instructions are given for christmas cake, rich fruit cake, wedding cake, marzipan, 'butter' icing made with vegan margarine, glacé and royal icings and a list of ready-made cake products, including chocolate and marzipan, suitable for vegans.

News includes recent press releases about Vegan Society activities plus comment on current issues. All are archived and dated.

Information sheets cover aspects of vegan nutrition, health and lifestyle such as calcium, protein, losing weight on a vegan diet, gluten-free vegan diets, making soya milk and tofu, vegan pregnancies, and non-dietary issues such as the use of silk, wool, leather, and humane pest control.

Vegan products lists companies and products permitted to carry the Vegan Society trademark.

Other Features

The site also promotes the sale of Vegan Society books and other merchandise, gives local society contact details, membership information, and suggests lots of links with a vegan theme, such as Vegan Bikers, and Garden O'Vegan, a vegan farming commune in Hawaii.
