Marmalade Awards
The Marmalade Awards is very much on the preserve maker's calendar with marmalade lovers from all over the world converging on Dalemain Mansion in Cumbria over a weekend in February (this year from 25-26 Feb). Over the next few weeks, jars of marmalade will start to arrive at Marmalade HQ in readiness for the WI to begin the judging. The winner of the best marmalade will see their winning recipe made and sold at Fornum & Mason.
WORLD'S BEST MARMALADE
There were over 1100 entries last year entering a number of different classes for the amateur preserver and artisan producer. Besides information on entering the awards, the site is full of useful information. Follow the marmalade making tips with notes on how specific flavours and textures of marmalade vary according to the fruit, the amount of natural pectin and sugar. Dan Lepard's essay on the history of marmalade making is an enlightening introduction to this very British breakfast staple.
WORLD'S ORIGINAL AWARDS
The weekend is packed with talks and workshops as well as a number of activities for children. The event helps to raise money for Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland. Visitors will be able to view all the entries on display and talk to the judges. Paddington Bear will be on hand as the award takes part in a record breaking attempt to create the World's Largest Jar of Marmalade.
BBC Radio 4's Food Programme, Ivan Day talks about the history of marmalade with examples of the earliest types of the preserve. Marmalade Question Time is headed up by Pam Corbin, the preserve expert from River Cottage, the Guardian's baking guru Dan Lepard, and Jonathan Miller, the new product development buyer at Fortnum & Mason. Dan Lepard will run a bread making masterclass on how to bake the best bread for marmalade and will answer questions on making your own bread. The marmalade expert Jane Maggs will run a demonstration on Wild & Fruitful Marmalade-Making.
Jane Hasell-McCosh, founder of the Marmalade Festival, has certainly put marmalade in the spotlight.
