The Guild of Food Writers

The Guild of Food Writers is an independent organisation of writers, broadcasters, editors and other media representatives, all of whom specialise in food and cookery. The site is fast, reliable, and straight-talking, and is enhanced by a simple layout, charming design, and large print. The home page has easy press-button access to the key sections, and you're never far away from a menu or useful link.

Special Features

Campaigns It's reassuring to know where the professionals stand on issues such as metrication (yes please), comprehensive and meaningful food product labelling (yes again) and GM foods (no thanks). Articles carefully explain the arguments for and against the subject matter, and how the Guild arrived at its views; you almost can't help but agree. Colin Spencer's assessment of GM foods is a must-see.

Recipe of the Month Thwarting the current obsession with TV chefs by featuring less widely-known authors, this section is invariably an interesting choice, partly because members are trying to impress each other as well as the general public. The generally chatty and personal writing style is a welcome change from newspaper and magazine journalism. There are some great previously-published recipes archived under What's Cooking with Guild Members.

Stirring Words This section is updated monthly and airs a diverse range of opinions and musings from members, including top writers Caroline Conran, Clarissa Hyman, Sue Style and Anissa Helou. From genetic engineering to the American restaurant Chez Panisse and one member's trip to China, it occasionally indulges the authors a little too much, but hey, it's their page.

Other Features

Food news, a link to Amazon, a calendar of forthcoming food events for members and consumers, details of Guild awards, how to buy the Guild members' directory, and a large selection of links. These include members' sites, bookshops, industry organisations, consumer interest groups, campaigning bodies, and professional writers groups.
