Good Things by Jane Grigson
This is one of the great cookery books. First published in 1971, it has been admired and praised by many great cookery writers. It is a book to return to again and again. Jane Grigson writes with wit and erudition. Read, for example, the introduction to her chapter on snails (or leeks or ice cream) and you will learn something.
While there are many classic dishes here, those who know the book, will have their favourites to which they always fall back on. Look out for lemon mousse, poor man's asparagus and avgolemono soup. Although there are many wonderful dishes for meat and game, it is the chapters on fruits and vegetables, which are outstanding.
The Vegetable Book and Fruit Book were published later and have just been reprinted by Penguin. These are two books which no serious cook should be without. Good Things has been given a face lift too, but the contents remain the same. There are references to Elizabeth David's cook shop, long gone alas.
On Jane Grigson's death in 1990, Alan Davidson described her as ‘the most companionable presence in the kitchen' and so she still is.
