Fab Food

If you fancy a trip down memory lane, then this funky book will help you relive old memories. Fab Food is a collection of those recipes that we loved and then subsequently lost when sun drained tomatoes and balsamic vinegar became the rage. This is retro with a capital R.

Feast on Porcupine balls, not the real thing of course but a touch of the Orient with a delicious combination of rice, beef, pork and water chestnuts. Whatever happened to Melba toast as I bet your granny always had a tin of it somewhere. It's so easy to make and lasts for a few days in an airtight tin. Simply, toast a slice of bread and then split it into two and toast again.

Steak Diane was many a restaurants' signature dish where the waiter could perform in full theatre. Leaping flames and the aroma of heating brandy can be achieved in the comfort of your own home. Thankfully our tarts have come a long way since Quiche Lorraine, but if you've forgotten what it tastes like, the recipe is here. Black Forest Gateau can still be found on the menu in pubs in our nether regions, although this is quickly being overtaken by tiramisu, the lengthy recipe is amongst those in Fab Food.

Austin Powers would love this book and its appeal will stretch to the younger generation who can look on the days of the 70s and 80s with great retro. For those of use who ate through it, Fab Food is a timely reminder of how old we are all getting.
