As the title suggests, a book devoted to muffins will be a gift from heaven for many cooks. What could be better than having your favourite recipes housed under one roof. However, you may be disappointed on the muffin front. Six recipes seems a bit of a let down with only one savoury recipe amongst them. Rest assured that the recipes Linda Collister has chosen must be the best. Marmalade muffins will put a spring into your step at the start of the day whilst pecan orange cranberry muffins will bring some festive cheer into the kitchen at Christmas time.

This book also takes in quick breads which use bicarbonate of soda as the raising agent. Saffron scones can be made in a food processor which makes them lighter and advises you to ‘handle the mixture as little as possible.' For a restorative snack mid morning go for the loaf cakes, such as banana pecan loaf or the delicious Dorset apple cake with a crumble topping.

Linda Collister finishes off the book with a chapter on yeasted breads. These are definitely user friendly recipes and the yeast shy cook will be tempted with such delights as sticky buns. Another book ideally suited to the winter months when the smell of baking pervades your home and the log fire burns.
