Screenwriters Utopia

Let me start by saying '3000 pages of web content', then add to that '100,000 monthly visitors', and end by mentioning that Chris Wehner, who runs the site, is a screenwriter, web editor and also writes regular columns covering 'Hollywood and screenwriting'. That should be more than enough encouragement for you to fire up your browsers and get online.

Firstly, and it's the only criticism we have, the home page is daunting. The lists of links are formidable, and could maybe put you off on a first visit. But stick with it and the mist starts to clear. Down the right of centre, the blue links are simply news. Every time you arrive at the site, check here to see what's going on in the industry. The left of centre is where the features live, more of those below. The extreme left is a sort of site guide, the best bits you will also find below.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Today's News Fairly self-explanatory. However, you won't find traditional film info as such. This is totally about the writers. You'll read who has just been attached to which project and all the insider news regarding scripts in the pipeline. It's fascinating to realise that some of these are the films that will be box office smashes in the future, but at the moment you're one of a small group who have even heard of them. Under the main heading for News is the link Script Sales, where you can read short items on who has sold what to whom.

Features One of the beauties (and ironically, also one of the frustrations) of this section is that there is no guide how to work through the information available to make you a better writer and help you sell your work. So, you wander the columns and click on titles that take your fancy. Then you realise it's all good stuff. Really good stuff, and you think you may have to phone work and feign illness in order to take it all in. The articles all manage to have a conversational tone that so many books on screenwriting fail to achieve. You actually enjoy reading the articles and gain masses of invaluable knowledge, without really having to try. This is our kind of learning. That's not to say your successful screenplay will be any easier to write, but at least you'll feel you know a little more about what you're trying to do.

Script Reviews You won't realise how incredibly useful this is until you've read a few. These are not reviews of the films, but reviews of the cold, black type on crisp white paper, scripts. It's a superb insight into how an intelligent reader can slate or extol the virtues of your work. Beware, the reviews contain spoilers which may upset your viewing pleasure when the films come out. If the Butler did it, it probably says so.

Work Shop Superb. Step by step guide to help you complete that screenplay.
Articles, Q and A, and more.

Hollywood Internet Links to everything to do with Hollywood on the internet.
