BBC - The Writers Room

The BBC have made great TV programmes in the past, and not unsurprisingly, they're quite keen to make more. Which is where maybe you come in. The BBC are trying to make it easier for writers to submit their work, and have it accepted. Which is exactly what you want to hear. This site tells you what they're up to, new writing-wise. Just as importantly it helps you to avoid falling at the first hurdle with your writing submissions. To flesh the site out there are a couple of interviews with successful writers, but the Writers Guidelines are the invaluable part of the site.

Navigate using the white underlined links on the left or the rather more eye-catching links in the main body of the homepage. It's a nice looking site and loads quickly into your browser with very little hanging around.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Guidelines This section claims to be updated regularly and should be an immediate stopping place for writers wanting to submit comedy or drama for the TV or Radio. They are fairly brief details but tell you everything you need to know. Although the site is run by the BBC, obviously all the information is pretty relevant whoever you send your script to. You'll find out what the BBC are looking for, how to format it, who to send it to, and pitfalls to avoid. If your script complies with all this information, you'll have a much better chance of seeing a positive response.

Write Now Find out about the New Writing Initiative which is dedicated to finding, not surprisingly, new writers. They read unsolicited scripts and try to get to readings and screenings of your work. You and your work will be assessed for suitability with the BBC.

Message Board There are several here for you to participate in after you've registered (it's free). The two connected with the Writers' Room are the main ones of interest. Some fairly involved message discussions take place here on Comedy or Drama. Well worth a look and a good place to ask any further questions you might have.>

OTHER FEATURES

Insight At the time of writing there was an interesting video interview with Lee Hall who penned Billy Elliot, where he talks about his views and experiences as a writer. You can download the necessary RealPlayer, if you don't have it.
