Take it Away
Take it Away is an Arts Council England scheme which allows those aged between 18 and 25 to take out an interest free loan between £100 and £2000 to buy musical instruments and assorted accessories.
ONE, TWO, A ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR
The sister scheme to Own Art, which offers interest free loans to people who want to buy contemporary art, Take it Away is a similarly generous project hoping to encourage people to become involved in music. Since the scheme launched in July 2007, more than 41,000 people have taken advantage of it. That means there are quite a few budding musos out there in possession of a brand new Les Paul or Tama drums. So we should expect an explosion of garage band videos on YouTube before too long.

The Take it Away site is a nicely designed online space, offering videos, news and answers to all the obvious questions about how the scheme works. You can access a network of more than 300 music retailers across England, and use the website to find out which one is nearest you.
This is an excellent initiative and, to those currently dancing around the so-called "bonfire of the quangos," ask what Cameron's Big Society would do to replace Arts Council schemes like this one.
