Saatchi Gallery

Charles Saatchi is, like Peggy Guggenheim, one of the great collectors. Love it or loathe it, the work he championed in the 1990s by the likes of Tracey Emin and Damain Hirst can't be ignored.

REOPENING

In 2004 much of the Saatchi collection was destroyed in a fire at the former home of the gallery in County Hall on the South Bank. In October 2008, in one of the art events of the year, the Saatchi Gallery reopened in a new location, this time in the Duke of York HQ building on King's Road Chelsea.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO

There's lots on the Gallery's website, from exhibitions past to exhibitions present and future. There's also an abundance of information about galleries, museums and exhibitions from all over the world, video tours of the Saatchi Gallery and links to dealers and art fairs. There's even a space for artists to upload their work for others to comment on.

A BIT OF A MESS

However, this is not a successful site. It's a busy and unappealing mass of text and moving images and not an enjoyable experience to browse. There is so much on the homepage that it is difficult to take it in. Little attention has been paid to the harmonious arrangement of the space and if the Saatchi Gallery wishes to become a big deal online it should have a design rethink. Then again, it's free to get into the Gallery, so just go there instead.
