Port Cities
Wow! is all we can say about this website. Set up under the auspices of the National Maritime Museum, this site invites visitors to experience the past by looking at the impact that major rivers and ports have had on the present. It looks at the influence of the past on five UK port cities, Bristol, Hartlepool, Liverpool, London and Southampton.
The interactive website enables public access to images from the collections of the museums and libraries of the five partners and includes thousands of images taken from photographs, paintings and documents and shown for the first time.
You can take a tour of the virtual galleries or you can link to one of the five cities mentioned above. A myriad of history and information opens before you. In Liverpool for example, there is a history of the slave trade, the impact of the war, and fabulous learning resources. In London, there is the story of maritime London, the royal dockyards, quizzes, games and much more.
This is a fabulous resource for anyone interested in the history of Britain.
