Port Cities UK

As befits an island Kingdom the UK has many port cities. This partnership of websites assisted by the New Opportunities Fund, is dedicated to the historical and cultural impact of five of them, Bristol, Hartlepool, Liverpool, London and Southampton. Port Cities UK gives its users access to images from the archives, libraries and museums of the five partners. It is hoped that the site will grow to include other cities around the UK.

Port Cities UK is full of fascinating information about all aspects of maritime history, including the role of the slave trade in the growth of the British Empire. There are outstanding image galleries, features on everything from the Liverpool cholera riots of 1832 to the Portuguese community in the port of London. Read about great voyages, famous figures and how ports grew in size. The online collection contains over 60,000 photographs, drawings, documents and paintings. Some are being displayed for the very first time.
