British Film Institute

The British Film Institute (BFI) was established in 1933 to promote British film and television. With its curatorial work, the BFI is at the heart of moving image culture in the UK.

WHAT IT DOES

In addition to releasing classic titles on DVD, the BFI publishes books and organises the London Film Festival. Its National Library and National Archive house the world's largest collection of moving image material and information on film and television. Its magazine, Sight & Sound, is one of the world's foremost film journals, dedicated to an intellectual engagement with cinema. And BFI Southbank in London, formerly the National Film Theatre, screens over a thousand films a year and hosts previews and interviews with significant players in the industry.

BFI ONLINE

The BFI website has more than enough to detain the committed cinephile. As well as news and listings, there is a notable devotion to the preservation and promotion of film, with the emphasis being more on Jean-Luc Godard than George Lucas. You can use the site to check out what's happening at the Southbank, enjoy clips from the archive, or find out about film education initiatives in the UK.

Sadly, there is no search function, which can make finding one's way around a little tricky, but there is so much here to enjoy that wandering around, with no particular destination in mind, is its own pleasure.
