The Shorty Awards

The website for the awards that honour "the best producers of short real time content" on Twitter.

THE BACKGROUND

The Shorty Awards began life in 2009 to recognise the work of the Twitterati. The public votes online in 26 categories, including art, humour and sports. There are also many unofficial crowd-soured catergories. There are six finalists in each category, with winners being decided by a combination of popular vote and the deliberation of The Real-Time Academy of Short Form Arts & Sciences. As the website puts it "the awards recognise each content creator's entire body of work, not just an individual tweet." Among the winners for 2008 was the fictional character of Peggy Olson from the American TV drama Mad Men, who won in the advertising catergory.

THE 2009 WINNERS

The 2009 Awards were announced in TheTimesCenter in the New York Times Tower on March 3 2010. Needless to say, the speeches were 140 characters or fewer. Stephen Fry was nominated for  the second consecutive year, this time in the Celebrity category, but lost out to Canadian actor Nathan Fillion. However, it's not all gloom and despond in the Fry household as his wife found success in the humour category, even if she had to share the glory with David Thorne, the Australian prankster behind 27bslash6.

The full list of winners can be found here.
