October 2009: Ricky Gervais' Blog
Without a natural gift for vanity and self-indulgence, Ricky Gervais would never have transformed David Brent into one of the most brilliant creations in British comedy history. That is not to dress up the shabby cast-offs of insult in the designer clothes of compliment. Many are envious of the squat, mildly coruplent little Berkshire chap and it is envy that is at the root of most anti-Gervasian rants. Who doesn't wish they had written The Office?
The British are an odd race who support the idea that we should strive for success, but resent and mock anyone who actually acheives it. We confuse criticism with the assassination of character. But you can dislike something Gervais has done without having to write predictable pieces in which you explore your newfound hatred for him, his penchant for black or the cut of his befangled jib.
Ricky Gervais is one of the cleverest and funniest writers around. But he hasn't seemed to pour every ounce of himself into a project since The Office. The world of Wernham Hogg is beautifully realised and succeeds by a breathtaking combination of emotional subtlety and embarrassing crudeness. Did as much work go into the writing of Extras? It had its moments, but felt much more rushed. Gervais (and let's not forget his creative partner Stephen Merchant) may well go on to produce something as extraordinary as his debut and should be celebrated as one of the most inventive comic talents around.
If his interview persona is anything to go by Ricky Gervais has moved on from Cloud 9 to other available wispy cirrus of happiness. And why should he not? The Office, Extras, Flanimals, an incredibly popular podcast, sell-out stand-up tours, The Simpsons, BAFTAS, Golden Globes, Hollywood …isn't he entitled to a smile? The man has worked with De Niro for God's sake. Imagine would it would be like to suddenly find yourself acting alongside your hero.
Anyway, the blog. If you are a Gervais obsessive this is the place to come to find out how much more interesting his life is than yours. You can read about how his directorial debut The Invention of Lying is doing and follow the production of another new film Cemetery Junction. There are pictures and videos and lots of evidence to support the oft-disputed contention that working on the check-out desk at Tesco is not more enjoyable than jetting around the world making TV comedies and movies.
Or:
Get thee into that corner Gervais and pretend to be miserable. Your country requires it.
