November 2010: The LRB Blog
The London Review of Books is Britain's finest literary and political periodical. It was founded in 1979, when the late Frank Kermode called for a new publication to fill the gap created by the absence of the Times Literary Supplement, which was one of the many victims of industrial action at the Times.
Noted for its political radicalism and its intelligent engagement with philosophy, history, art, science and literature, the LRB is able to draw on a long list of brilliant contributors, including academics, novelists and journalists. It also has a significant presence on the web.
The LRB blog is regularly updated with posts from writers like Andrew O'Hagan, Jenny Diski and Thomas Jones. The triumph of the blog is to sacrifice none of the quality of the print edition. The blog features the usual one-liners and links to audio-visual material that characterise the form, but the longer posts are as engaging, funny and provocative as anything to be found in the magazine itself.
