March 2010: Cinematical

Film has a considerable presence on the internet, reflecting the extraordinary commentary industry that surrounds film-making, a sound and fury which works to create the illusion that there is so little distance between the images on the screen and the excited conversations that go on about them that perhaps all the world is now a filmset and us men and women merely wannabe actors.

However, for all the fluff and brouhaha there are lots of good film sites around, from /Film to IMDB. Cinematical is a blog very much at the Empire end of the movie writing spectrum, focusing on the glitz and spectacle of cinema rather than the more scholarly and aesthetic concerns of the excellent Sight & Sound.

There's all sorts here, including reviews, interviews, casting information and rumours about who's filming what with whom. You also get the typical obsessions of fandom: the favourites, the lists, the blooper revelations, the coolest this, the funniest that.

Cinematical has a light tone and doesn't take film too seriously. If you're the kind of filmgoer that has ever wondered which movie character you should name your dog after, this is the site for you.
