Whether you are an enthusiastic amateur gardener, more of a specialist or someone with a passion for museums, The Garden Museum is well worth a visit.
VISITING
Exploring and celebrating British gardens and gardening, this wonderful museum is situated on the South Bank of the Thames, opposite the Houses of Parliament. The Museum has a spectacular home in the former St Mary-at-Lambeth parish Church, which itself its steeped in history and has some interesting stories to tell. The museum is open daily from 10.30am to 5pm (excluding the first monday of the month).
GARDENS
There are two exquisite gardens that offer visitors a retreat from the bustle of London streets. The 17th century style knot garden, with historically authentic planting was created in 1981 and formally opened by the Queen Mother in 1983. The wild garden was added in spring 2007 to provide a greater bio-diversity of urban habitat to support and promote wildlife.
MUSUEM HISTORY
The Garden Museum (formerly the Museum of Garden History) aims to become the leading national venue for exhibitions and debate on gardens and garden design. It opened its doors in November 2008 having undergone a dramatic transformation. While the historic structure remained untouched, it welcomed visitors to a newly designed interior with a sequence of individual spaces for exhibitions, the permanent collection, education, café and shop. For the first time a selection from its collection of work on paper is on display; and it will also feature a series of temporary exhibitions. be the first to write a mini-review for this site! |
